3 marketeers - an intern's story
Having recently graduated from Kingston University of London with a degree in Marketing Management I returned to Bermuda full of gusto and ready to apply my learned techniques in the real world.
I knew it would be difficult to secure a position in the specialist area of marketing but having dedicated 3 years of study towards it I was, and still am, confident that this is the field I wish to be in. So needless to say when my Dad called me out of the blue and said he bumped into his old friend and colleague - Rachelle who was looking for a keen marketing intern - I was excited... Finally, an opportunity to try my hand at real-life marketing, a chance to feel out the industry I had dedicated my studies to, and most importantly, a foot in the door.
The day of the interview (which coincidentally was the same day my Dad called me with the news) I decided to prepare myself for a rigorous screening process complete with a military styled interrogation and at least one kind of ancient Chinese torture techniques. I printed my CV, packed my briefcase/document holder and pressed my nicest shirt. The interview was scheduled for 4:30 pm so my Mum and I departed the house at 4:10 with plenty of time to spare.
As Aardvark Communications is located slightly out of town we had a little more trouble locating it then we had expected. With the time creeping uncomfortably close to 4:30 I decided to call Rachelle and ask for directions. We were close, but currently headed in the wrong direction. With my Mum slowly coming to the realization that I was going to be maybe 5 mins late she leapt on the opportunity to teach me a lesson and insisted that we had left the house too late and that by me being late I was only piling the pressure on myself. Sweating in my best suit I sat back and turned up the AC a notch as she attempted a Lewis Hamilton-esk maneuver in her best efforts to get me to Aardvark on time.
As it turned out the interview was very informal, and I was invited to start the next day and discovered that jeans would suffice. I also had the chance meet Rebecca who is an Account Director and it was nice to see Rachelle again.
Unfortunately I was not requested to open my brown briefcase which as I had strategically packed with letters, notes, and company information. However all together it was a success and I was looking forward to my first day at an official marketing agency.
